Amtrak Coast Starlight Review: Los Angeles to Sacramento in a One-Bedroom
If you’ve ever dreamed of a scenic train journey through California, the Amtrak Coast Starlight is one of the most beautiful routes in the U.S. On my recent trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento, I booked a one-bedroom sleeper and here’s what the experience was really like.
The Journey Begins at Union Station
The highlight? Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., the train hugs
the Pacific Ocean near Santa Barbara. These coastal views are why the Coast
Starlight is so famous among train enthusiasts.
Meals Onboard
We opted to have lunch in-room — a patty melt and hamburger with chips, drinks, and dessert included. Dinner in the dining car was a highlight, with shrimp, salmon in lobster sauce, and an incredible chocolate cake that might just be worth the trip alone.
Inside the One-Bedroom
The one-bedroom includes:
- A private bathroom with shower and toilet combo
- A sink outside the bathroom with toiletries provided
- Outlets, small closet, jump seat, and two beds (upper + lower)
- Bedding and turndown service from the room attendant
It’s cozy — think RV-style bathroom — but comfortable for
the journey.
- Access to Union Station lounge with snacks and baggage assistance
- Reserved meals with included drinks and dessert
- Private bathroom and space to relax
- Unforgettable ocean and coastal views near Santa Barbara
- Comfortable dinner experience with surprisingly good food (and chocolate cake!)
Cons of Amtrak Coast Starlight
One-Bedroom
- Observation lounge can be very crowded
- Shared dining tables if your group is fewer than 4 people
- Some desserts and meals were just okay (the vanilla cake was dry)
- Price may feel high for the level of comfort compared to hotels
