Cozumel is a Caribbean island off the eastern coast of
Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, famous for its clear turquoise water, coral reefs,
and relaxed island vibe. It’s one of the top cruise ship destinations in the
region and a major hub for scuba diving and snorkeling, thanks to the nearby
Mesoamerican Barrier Reef—the second-largest reef system in the world.
The island’s main town, San Miguel de Cozumel, offers shops, restaurants, and
waterfront promenades where visitors can enjoy local seafood and Mexican cuisine.
Beyond town, you’ll find quieter beaches, beach clubs, and eco-parks like Punta
Sur Eco Beach Park, which features lagoons, wildlife, and scenic viewpoints.
Cozumel blends natural beauty with Mayan history. While most major ruins are on
the mainland, the island itself has smaller archaeological sites such as San
Gervasio, once a sacred place dedicated to the Mayan goddess Ixchel.
Popular activities include diving, snorkeling, fishing, jeep tours, and ferry
trips to Playa del Carmen. The island is also known for its warm climate
year-round, friendly locals, and laid-back atmosphere, making it ideal for both
adventure seekers and travelers looking to unwind.
Many cruise lines offer excursions on the mainland to cenotes
and Xcaret parks. I recommend booking these excursions directly through the
cruise line. The ferry can be unpredictable or cancelled due to water
conditions. The shore excursions on this list are all on Cozumel.
Cozumel has three ports: Punta Langosta is the closest to downtown. Puerto Maya and International Terminal are about
five miles south of San Miguel Be sure to note which port your ship is using.
Click here for a full list of all of these excursions. Or click the title of the excursion below. This will give you more information about the excursion. If you book through this link or the resort day pass link, Trips with Angie will get a small commission and a copy of your booking. If you’ve booked your cruise through Trips with Angie, we can double check the timing and add it to your itinerary.
