St. Thomas is a major cruise ship destination appearing on
many Eastern Caribbean cruise itineraries. Sighted by Christopher Columbus in
1493, it was colonized by European powers, mainly Denmark. In 1917, it was
purchased by the United States for strategic military concerns during World War
I. Tourism is the main industry here. Visitors to the island enjoy snorkeling,
sailing and island hopping. The island has two cruise ship docks: Havensight
and Crownbay. Havensight has the capacity for more ships.
If you want to explore on your own, St Thomas has a large
downtown area. The island also has over 40 beaches for visitors to enjoy, with
Magens Bay Beach being one of the most popular. When you disembark from your
ship, group taxis will be available. It can be very difficult to get a private
taxi to one address. The common locations will be Magens Bay Beach or downtown.

stop for photo. It picks up at the cruise port. The price is $50 per person. If you queued up
for a taxi at the port, the round trip ride is $35 per person. Why pay the extra
$15 per person? So you don’t have to wait in line and you have certainty of when
your taxi will leave and return.
